Psychiatry & Medication Management at FJ Psychological Services
At FJ Psychological Services, our psychiatric providers offer comprehensive, individualized psychiatric care and medication management for children, adolescents, and adults.
Our psychiatric nurse practitioners, Lynn and Karlyn, bring experience in psychiatric assessment, medication management, and ongoing treatment of a wide range of mental health concerns. Karlyn has a particular focus on pediatric psychiatric care, while our team works collaboratively to help patients find treatment options appropriate for their individual needs, symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.
Personalized Medication Management
We recognize that psychiatric medication can be an important component of treatment, but it is not the only component. Our providers take time to understand each patient's concerns, previous treatment experiences, medication history, response to prior medications, potential side effects, and overall goals.
When medication is appropriate, our psychiatric providers work with patients and families to develop an individualized treatment plan and monitor progress over time. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively, with an emphasis on education, informed decision-making, safety, and ongoing evaluation of benefits and potential side effects.
Integrated Psychiatric and Psychological Care
One of the advantages of receiving care at FJ Psychological Services is access to an integrated behavioral health team.
Our psychiatric providers can collaborate with our psychologists, therapists, psychological testing team, and other behavioral health professionals when appropriate and with appropriate patient authorization. This allows us to consider both the biological and psychological aspects of mental health rather than approaching medication management in isolation.
Patients may receive psychiatric medication management alone or combine psychiatric services with psychotherapy, psychological assessment, or other services available through our practice based on their individual needs.
Our philosophy is not to simply "push medication." Instead, medication is considered one potential tool within a broader treatment plan designed to promote emotional well-being, functioning, stability, and long-term growth.
GeneSight® Pharmacogenomic Testing
FJ Psychological Services also offers access to GeneSight® pharmacogenomic testing when clinically appropriate.
GeneSight is a genetic test that provides information about how an individual's genetic variations may affect the way their body interacts with certain psychiatric medications. This information may be helpful for some patients who have experienced difficulty finding an effective medication, have had problematic side effects, or have tried multiple medications without satisfactory results.
Testing involves a simple cheek swab that is sent to the GeneSight laboratory for analysis. Once the results are available, your psychiatric provider can review them with you and discuss how the information may—or may not—inform medication selection and treatment planning.
GeneSight results are one source of clinical information and do not determine which medication will work best for an individual. Medication decisions continue to take into account symptoms, diagnoses, medical history, previous medication response, other medications, patient preferences, and the provider's clinical judgment.
