Kalaya | Therapy Intern

Hi there! My name is Kalaya, and I am a new therapy intern here at FJ Psychological Services! I earned my bachelor’s degree in intradisciplinary psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2024, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Bradley University, where I am in my final year of schooling. Throughout my academic journey, I developed a strong understanding of mental health and the complex factors that influence well-being. I learned the importance of empathy, cultural humility, adaptability, curiosity, and being present and attentive to the person in front of me. I am dedicated to offering sensitive therapeutic care to every client who walks through the door. I am super excited to be here!

Prior to starting my internship, I spent years as a lifeguard and swim instructor—roles that quietly prepared me for the work I do now. On the pool deck, I learned how to stay calm under pressure, spot the earliest signs of struggle, and offer support in ways that empower rather than overwhelm. Those same instincts guide me in therapy: noticing what is beneath the surface, responding with steadiness, and helping clients feel safe enough to take emotional risks. These roles also taught me patience, creativity, and the art of meeting people exactly where they are. Every swimmer learns differently, and every client heals or processes things differently. My approach is shaped by that understanding—gentle pacing, clear communication, and a belief that progress is built through small, consistent steps. These experiences ultimately translate into therapeutic work that is attuned, structured, and responsive to each client’s pace, needs, and emotional safety.

I am passionate about supporting younger children and adolescents as they learn to make sense of their life experiences. I am especially drawn to play therapy, where toys, stories, and imagination become powerful tools for expression and healing. I aim to integrate cognitive‑behavioral techniques and other evidence‑based approaches to help them build insight, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop practical skills. I enjoy creating environments where young people feel safe to be themselves and where therapy becomes a space for growth, resilience, and genuine connection.

A few fun facts about me:

  • I can speak Japanese.
  • I am a big fan of Star Wars and Pokémon!
  • I am a goofball and love being silly.
  • I have a senior pup named Choco, which is short for chocolate!
